Kelly Rowland is standing by Jay-Z‘s wishes for his wife Beyoncé to get all her flowers.
The multi-talented singer and actress expressed her support for the rapper after he mentioned Beyoncé’s lack of a Grammy Album of the Year award during his acceptance speech for the Global Impact honor.
Kelly Rowland Celebrated Jay-Z For Speaking Up For ‘A Lot Of Artists’
Even though she holds the record for the most Grammy wins, Beyoncé has never won the most prestigious prize: Album of the Year.
Her husband of nearly two decades brought attention to the notable omission in the Recording Academy’s recent voting pattern. During the acceptance speech for the aforementioned Dr. Dre Global Impact Award on Sunday night, Jay-Z told the crowd:
“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys; never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work.”
The speech earned him applause on social media, with one Grammy viewer sharing, “Jay-Z is 100% correct. The fact that Beyoncé has never won album of the year… is shameful,” and another chimed in with:
“We just need to go ahead and applaud Jay-Z for saying what everyone’s been thinking about the nominations and Beyoncé never winning album of the year.”
Jay-Z’s statement was also applauded by Rowland, who walked the red carpet at the premiere of “Bob Marley: One Love at the Regency Village Theatre” ahead of its February 14 release.
Expressing her admiration for the “Empire State of Mind” hitmaker and his message, the singer gushed to ET on Tuesday saying:
“Shawn Carter is one of the greatest men I know and his words ring so loud to me. I couldn’t be more proud of him. I’m just really happy for a lot of things that he said.”
Going further, Rowland added, “I think that he made a lot of artists feel very seen and very heard in those minutes that he took on stage.”
After reiterating that there was “no disrespect” intended, the former Destiny’s Child member wrapped up by noting that it was about finding “new ways to come together for new artists.”
Rowland Opened Up About Unintentionally Revealing Blue Ivy’s Gender Before Her Birth
The last time Rowland touched on Beyoncé and her longtime beau, it had to do with a cringey moment she experienced involving the power couple. As reported by The Blast, she delved into the conversation during an appearance on the podcast, “Yeah, I F—ked That Up,” where her friend and collaborator Billy Mann asked about her biggest mistake.
Taken aback by the question, the 42-year-old admitted that nobody had ever asked her that before, leading her to reflect on the challenges she faced — especially on a distinct error made during her adulthood that grabbed public attention. The vocalist disclosed:
“Oh my God. When I made a mistake and told the sex of Bey’s baby when she was pregnant with Blue. That was the worst moment ever. The worst moment ever.”
The moment in question occurred in 2011, when Beyoncé was dedicated to concealing her pregnancy until the MTV Video Music Awards that year. While the “Single Ladies” singer had not yet shared her then-unborn child’s gender, Rowland was caught off guard during a red-carpet interview when asked about her plans for a baby shower gift.
At the time, she responded, “I don’t know…I think her dad is gonna give her everything anyways; all I can give her is love.” The Atlanta native continued saying:
“I have no idea what I’m going to buy Beyoncé at the baby shower because Jay is going to buy that little girl every single thing possible. She won’t be spoiled, but she will be very well looked after.”
Reflecting on the incident, Rowland openly acknowledged that her unintended use of the pronoun “she” during the interview was a mistake. However, it was only when rumors began spreading that she became aware of her error.
Expressing her surprise, she recalled her reaction: “I was like, ‘What are they talking about? I didn’t say… Oh my God!’ It was bad because it was no one’s business.”
